Music Monday: High Fidelity

Movie Poster for High Fidelity

When someone mentions “soundtrack,” I automatically think of High Fidelity.

This soundtrack brings back the original idea of the mixtape. If you see the movie, you too will understand how the mixtape is of critical importance to the love-sick, slightly pathetic protagonist played by John Cusack.

Clearly, the soundtrack is meant to be listened to in-order, in one sitting. Occasionally, I cheat and skip to my favorite Velvet Underground and The Kinks songs. This soundtrack provides the perfect atmosphere for the newly heartbroken and allows you to empathize with Cusack’s numerous tearful scenes.

However, it can also be enjoyed for those who are feeling less tragic and want to hear an amazing compilation of some incredible songs that work together to make the perfect mixed tape (modern translation: iTunes playlist).

Wise words from our newest board member, Tina Mitaine

About the Workshop
1. How long have you been on the Workshop’s Board of Directors?
Since May 2012. I am a new and excited board member!

2. What brought you to the Workshop?
I have a strong affinity towards the arts. I was drawn to the arts, theatre and dance which grew stronger through my twenties. I had an artistic family who always made arts an important part of our lives. I realized the arts needed to be supported.

Today, I take Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban dance classes, and I love it!

3. Why did you choose to join the Workshop’s board?
I had just returned from a trip in Cuba and was spurred to support the arts in America. The students’ access to arts education in Cuba is incredible; it is so readily accessible. To come back to America and see the lack of arts in schools inspired me to get involved.

I really like the social justice emphasis at the Workshop. It appeals to me that the Workshop targets the most underserved schools in the city. It reaches the kids who need arts the most.

Performing Arts Workshop is also extremely well organized and the staff is extremely efficient.

San Mateo

2. Two albums you could not live without?
Lauryn Hill’s “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”
Led Zeppelin’s “Physical Graffiti”

The Mission! It has character and great food.

5. Where do you escape to on the weekends?
The Mission or Stinson Beach.

6. Name an artist you would want to meet in person (alive or dead)?
Potentially Paul Rog, or for fabulosity, Josephine Baker. Those two together–well that would be a night. She danced, helped in the war, and she rocked a banana skirt.

7. Favorite restaurant?
Tartine. It may be cliche, but it’s awesome. When you are having a bad day and you eat a croissant the size of two fists, everything is good again.
