Music Monday: From Country Ballad to Trance

I planned on promoting the soundtrack to Fred Zinnemann’s western film High Noon. Specifically, I admire Rex Ritter’s title-track “High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darlin’).” Scattered throughout the movie — and when Cary Grant faces his deadly, bolo tie wearing foes — the song not only acts as the movie’s featured motif, but also lyrically transcends the expected dullness when a 21st century teenager watches a black and white western film. I was so moved by the song that I programmed it as my ringtone. Singing along with a contrived country twang I would, on occasion, get caught up in the moment and miss the call.

However, deep down in the back alleyways of my musical soul, I believe I should be promoting my generation’s music. After all, I am not a retired cowboy, but a college girl who has not seen her twenties.

Therefore, let me bring to the foreground the musical styling of 21st century music— Daft Punk’s “synthpop” in the 2010 film Tron: Legacy. Daft Punk is a Grammy award winning French duo who specialize in electronic house music and club singles. In Tron: Legacy, their score consists of an array of synthesizers, heavy bass inclusions, and even an 85-piece orchestra. With fluidity and talent, the duo magically combines orchestral sounds and trance beats to accompany futuristic fight scenes and neon lit car chases. But what makes the score unique is Daft Punk’s cameo appearance in the film. Acting as disc jockey programs, Daft Punk transforms the so-so Tron sequel into a rave worthy performance.
