Summer Jams

This is a simple one. School is out and its summertime! At the Workshop, we hold our artist appreciation party and start to work on summer programming. Many of our sites will continue to serve youth in the coming months, and we’re there to help bring them the education they need and deserve. However, we also get a little breather and reflect on the year. What do you do during the summer? What does your summer soundtrack look like? You can listen to our Summer Jams playlist on Spotify.

What are your summer jams?

  • Ivy, Finance and Operations Manager
    • California Dreamin’
    • All Summer Long
    • The Coast
  • Karena, Program Director
    • DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince “Summertime” – Excellent use of imagery. It’s the jam!
    • Next “Too Close” – It was my mumblecore roomate’s and my embarrassing secret summer jam in ’98.
    • Toots and the Maytals “Bam Bam” – Forget work…let’s regge!
  • Gary, Artistic Director. Because summer is Gary’s vacation time and he has fallen in love with three versions of the same song.
    • Frank Sinatra “Get Happy” 1954
    • Ella Fitzgerald “Get Happy” 1961
    • Red Norvo & Charlie Parker “Get Happy” Jazz version 1945
  • Beverly, Individual Giving Manager
    • Dove Shack – “Summertime in the LBC” – It’s all in the title.
    • Montell Jordan – “This Is How We Do It” – The first six words are all it takes to start a party.
    • Alabama Shakes debut album is going to be my summer playlist. It’s fresh, funky and supper fun.
    • Scott McKenzie “San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair)” – Who says SF summers aren’t awesome?
  • Larry, Program & Administrative Assistant
    • Wendy Rene “Bar-B-Q” – Even the no good cat sitting on a stump wants some.
    • Shorty Long “Function at the Junction” – Because everyone’s gathering around the BBQ above.
    • The Royalettes “Blue Summer” – Beautifully winsome and breezy kind of like San Francisco.
  • Anne, Program & Communications Coordinator
    • OutKast “So Fresh, So Clean” – When I worked a sweaty summer job and would come home all gross and tired out I would lie on my bed and just listen to this song and be glad the work day was done.
    • The Lovin’ Spoonful “Summer In The City” – This was one of the first songs I associated with a season. It really makes you feel like you’re there in the heat.
    • Top 3 Summer Albums: Beck’s Guero, Los Amigos Invisibles’s The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera and Portishead’s Dummy. Any of these albums makes me think of summertime.
  • Jessica, Executive Director
    • Mungo Jerry “In The Summertime”
    • Jonathan Richman “That Summer Feeling”
    • Thin Lizzy “Dancing in the Moonlight (It’s Caught Me In It’s Spotlight)”
  • Laurie, Institutional Giving Manager
    • Oranj Symphonette “Lujon”
    • Pete Laroca/Joe Henderson “Lazy Afternoon”
    • Beach Boys “Let’s Go Away for Awhile”
    • M. Ward “One Life Away”
    • The National “Fake Empire”
    • Comsat Angels “Independence Day”
