Music Monday: Hungry for Tunes

What song makes you hungry?

The Hunger Games aside, the week the Workshop thinks about songs that make us hungry. You may think it’s a joke, but some of us have certain songs that get us salivating. Do you have this problem? You’re listening along to 99 Luftballoons and all of a sudden you’re craving schnitzel? Okay, maybe it’s not that dramatic for you. Food is a great topic of conversation for Workshop students. It’s a really easy way to bring in cultural competency into the classroom, especially if there’s some sort of holiday going on. Different families eat different kinds of food for different celebrations. Students can act out the different types of food or sing songs from cultural traditions. They can talk about what it means to them and how it makes them feel when they eat certain kinds of food. It’s also a chance to deal with harder topics about food such as scarcity and famine. This type of sharing between young people generates community within the classroom, as well as addresses larger social and global issues. But back to you, do you have a song you always listen to while making food, and now it never fails to make you hungry? Let us know what else should be on our list.

  • Karena, Program Director – Sugarhill Gang “Rapper’s Delight” “the macaroni’s soggy the peas are mushed and the chicken tastes like wood” It’s not appetizing but it makes me think of food which leads to feeling hungry!
  • Beverly, Individual Giving Manager – “P.Y.T” by Michael Jackson. “Tenderoni you got to be.”
  • Jessica, Executive Director – “You scream, I scream, we all scream for ice cream?” My family sang it when we went out to ice cream. http://youtu.be/-0pfP_MD6xA
  • Larry, Program & Administrative Assistant – “Sweets for My Sweet” by The Drifters. Desserts. Duh.
  • Ivy, Finance & Operations Manager – “Rio” by Duran Duran. I always heard it at parties.
  • Gary, Artistic Director – No song makes me hungry.
  • Anne, Program & Communications Manager – “Case of You” by Joni Mitchell. It makes me hungry for love though, not food. I sang this as a Freshmen in college with a Senior who played the guitar. It was my first experience singing solo on stage and that made me hungry for more experiences like it. And the Senior was quite a good looking guy as well.
  • Laurie, Institutional Giving Manager – Cibo Matto Viva! La Woman — The whole album
